How to Add Poly Pellet Weights to Your Knitted Toy

Poly pellet weights are a great way to keep a toy upright or add extra flop to dangly legs.

Poly pellets are available at most major craft stores and online. If you’ve used them for sewn toys, you may be used to just pouring them into limbs and adding stuffing on top.

Because knitted stitches are loose, you need an extra step for knitted toys to ensure no pellets escape. They need to be sewn into a little pouch. No one is going to see it, so it doesn’t have to be pretty. Here is a fast and simple way to make a poly pellet weight.

If you don’t have poly pellets, you can also use dried rice or beans. You toy will hold up for a long time, but be aware that natural materials can decay or attract bugs.

Step 1

Cut a roundish scrap of fabric and sew a loose running stitch around the edge.

The stitches around the fabric have been pulled tight to form a bowl. Poly pellets are inside.

Step 2

Pull on thread to create a pouch. Fill pouch with poly pellets.

The pouch of poly pellets is pulled closed. A needle runs through the top, securing it.

Step 3

Pull thread so pouch is completely closed. Add a few stitches to ensure pouch is sewn closed. Tie off and trim excess thread.
